In fine, handmade jewellery the most commonly used metals are the precious metals: gold; silver; platinum; and palladium. In design pieces tending towards art jewellery, specialty alloys such as shakudo, shibuichi and some bronzes and brasses are also used – mainly for the patinas they develop after chemical treatments.
